Gurpreet Chahal Highlights Diversity and Service in UK Mortgage Sector

Gurpreet Chahal, strategic key relationship manager at L&G’s Mortgage Club and co-founder of the South Asian Mortgage Professionals & Allies Network (SAMPAN), has spoken about the influence of heritage, diversity, and service in the UK mortgage industry. Chahal’s comments were made as part of South Asian Heritage Month, in an interview with Mortgage Solutions.

Chahal, who is British Sikh and of Punjabi heritage, described how his background has shaped both his personal and professional identity. He emphasised values such as humility, integrity, community, and a desire to support others. Chahal also highlighted the importance of championing diversity in all its forms, referencing industry groups such as the Diversity and Inclusivity Finance Forum (DIFF), Black Mortgage Professionals and Allies Network (BMPAN), Pride in Finance, Working in Mortgages (WIM), and the Mortgage Industry Mental Health Charter (MIMHC).

The theme for this year’s South Asian Heritage Month is Unity in Diversity. Chahal noted that the diversity of Britain and its customers means that journeys into homeownership vary widely, with customers coming from different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, faiths, family structures, and financial starting points. He pointed out that some buyers may be first-time purchasers supported by family, others may be self-employed entrepreneurs, and some may be building a future after their families migrated to the UK.

Chahal discussed the concept of ‘seva’, or selfless service, as a guiding principle from his childhood. He credited his father’s experience of moving to the UK at age 18 as an inspiration for values such as resilience, hard work, and the importance of creating opportunities for future generations. For Chahal, leadership in the industry means using one’s platform to support colleagues, strengthen communities, and help more people achieve homeownership.

He also stressed that diversity goes beyond heritage and ethnicity, and includes championing representation for all. Chahal stated that when colleagues feel valued for their backgrounds, they are more likely to contribute fully, and when customers see people who understand their experiences, they are more confident in seeking advice.

Chahal concluded that celebrating heritage in the workplace allows colleagues to learn from each other, and that Asian heritage is rich and varied, spanning different countries, regions, languages, and faiths.
