L&C’s Ismail Azam Highlights Impact of Workplace Inclusivity
Ismail Azam, a mortgage adviser at L&C and winner of the Distributor Rising Star award at the British Mortgage Awards 2026, has spoken about the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the mortgage industry. Azam, who comes from an Indian Sikh and Pakistani Muslim background, shared his experiences and views as part of South Asian Heritage Month.
Azam described growing up in a predominantly white area and how his identity was often challenged. He noted that the appointment of Sidney Wager as managing director at L&C marked a significant change in the company’s leadership diversity, which he found inspiring.
Azam is a member of L&C’s employee resource group (ERG), led by Rachel Eason-Whale. The group, called ‘We Belong’, is an inclusivity and diversity initiative that holds monthly discussions on topics such as race, sexuality, ableism, and ageism. Azam described these forums as opportunities to create a more inclusive workspace for all staff.
He highlighted the need to break down barriers that could prevent minority groups from entering or progressing within the mortgage industry. Azam also discussed the importance of recognising the history and contributions of the South Asian community, while improving education and understanding for everyone.
Azam pointed out that the mortgage industry may not see as many South Asian clients on a daily basis, which can lead to a lack of understanding about the structural and economic barriers to homeownership faced by some groups. He noted that stereotypes may persist due to limited contact, and that some advisers may be hesitant to work with clients who have limited English proficiency. Azam emphasised the need for advisers to challenge their own unconscious biases and to engage in open conversations to improve their ability to serve all customers.
