Lewisham Council Launches Taskforce to Tackle Rogue Landlords

Lewisham Council has introduced a new intelligence-led Rogue Landlords Taskforce to address non-compliance in the borough’s private rented sector. The initiative will use data, local intelligence, and targeted inspections to identify properties where landlords or responsible parties may not be meeting legal obligations.

The taskforce marks the first time Lewisham has focused on proactive enforcement, including inspections of licensed properties with compliance concerns, suspected unlicensed properties, and areas where intelligence suggests poor housing conditions or waste management issues linked to private rentals. The council already operates property licensing schemes to regulate private rented homes and take action against landlords who fail to meet required standards.

According to Lewisham Council, 153 enforcement notices have been issued so far this financial year, nearly matching the 155 issued in the whole of the previous year. Since April, the council has issued £160,875 in fines, more than double the amount from the previous 12 months. The new taskforce is expected to further increase enforcement activity.

Income from financial penalties is ringfenced to support the council’s private rented sector enforcement work, funding further investigations and enforcement actions. The taskforce will prioritise wards where data indicates a higher likelihood of non-compliance, such as areas with suspected unlicensed properties or a history of enforcement action.

Enforcement measures may include civil penalty notices, statutory notices, or prosecution, depending on the evidence and circumstances. The council states that fines for rogue landlords can reach up to £40,000.

This development is relevant for letting agents and inventory clerks operating in Lewisham, as increased inspections and enforcement may impact property management practices and compliance requirements in the borough.
