London Maintains Strong Appeal for International Property Buyers

London continues to attract significant interest from international buyers, according to new research. Despite recent challenges such as Brexit, higher taxes, and additional Stamp Duty charges, the capital remains a popular destination for living, learning, and investing.

A report titled "What the World Thinks of London" found that nearly two-thirds (64%) of international respondents from New York, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Paris would choose to live in London if given the opportunity. The research, based on a survey of 1,000 people, also revealed that 47% believe London offers the best prospects for skilled professionals seeking career advancement.

The findings highlight that London’s reputation for culture and history is particularly strong, with 83% of respondents associating the city with these qualities. Other key associations include world-class education (79%), high-quality lifestyle (75%), stability (70%), diversity, global financial leadership, and safety (57%).

The report, conducted by London Square, also notes that London has become one of the most competitively priced major global cities for residential property. According to the company, a typical two-bedroom apartment in London is 23% cheaper than in New York and 60% less expensive than in Singapore. This pricing gap is attributed to recent price corrections and a period of sterling weakness, which has improved London’s affordability for international buyers. Additionally, transaction costs for overseas purchasers are lower in London compared to markets like Hong Kong and Singapore, where foreign buyer levies have increased.

For UK letting agents and inventory clerks, these findings suggest ongoing demand from international tenants and investors, reinforcing London’s position as a key global property market.
