Mortgage Leaders Discuss Building Mental Resilience in High-Pressure Roles

A recent Working in Mortgages Lunch & Learn session explored the importance of mental resilience and wellbeing for professionals in high-pressure financial services roles. The event, hosted by Jason Berry, group sales director at Crystal Specialist Finance, featured insights from Richard Beardshaw of HSBC UK and Charles Morley of Metro Bank.

The panel discussed the demanding nature of financial services, citing tight deadlines, volatile markets, changing regulation, and the responsibility of supporting customers through major financial decisions. Both Morley and Beardshaw reflected on their extensive industry experience, noting that periods of uncertainty—such as economic shocks, regulatory changes, the pandemic, and the cost-of-living crisis—are inevitable.

Morley described resilience as the ability to adapt to setbacks, maintain perspective, and learn from challenges rather than being defined by them. He emphasised the importance of focusing on what genuinely matters, taking time to switch off, and reflecting on both successes and failures to build resilience for future challenges.

Beardshaw highlighted the value of trusted colleagues and honest conversations, stating that resilience is often built collectively rather than individually. He advocated for involving colleagues in problem-solving and emphasised that open discussion leads to better decisions and a sense of shared responsibility.

The discussion also addressed the role of leadership in fostering resilient, high-performing teams. Morley stressed that psychological safety—where employees feel respected, listened to, and valued—is crucial. He argued that when team members can contribute ideas, ask questions, and admit mistakes without fear of blame, collaboration and performance improve.

Both speakers challenged traditional views of leadership, suggesting that authenticity and openness about challenges can build credibility and encourage others to speak openly about their own development needs.

The session concluded with practical chair-based yoga exercises led by Guneet Khurana, senior customer analyst and qualified yoga instructor at Yorkshire Building Society.
