TDS Research: No Such Thing as a Typical Tenant Any More

New research suggests there is no longer a typical tenant profile in the private rented sector. Three quarters of renters would like to buy their own home, yet over four in 10 expect to rent for the rest of their lives.

The findings come from a survey of more than 2,000 private renters in England, conducted by the TDS Charitable Foundation. The research also found that more than half (51%) of renters say they would like to move out of their current property but feel unable to.

The picture that emerges is of a tenant base with widely differing circumstances and aspirations, rather than a single, predictable profile. For letting agents and inventory clerks, tenancy lengths, moving intentions and long-term housing plans vary considerably from household to household.

The survey was conducted by the TDS Charitable Foundation, the research arm of deposit protection scheme TDS. Full details of the research are available in the original report.
