Parental Support Aids UK Adults Facing Housing Affordability Pressures
Higher mortgage costs and worsening housing affordability are leading thousands of UK adults to seek financial support from their parents, according to research reported by Mortgage Solutions. Those receiving parental help obtained an average of £11,241 to meet housing costs and other financial pressures.
A study by savings app Spring found that a quarter of recipients cited housing affordability challenges as a key reason for receiving financial assistance from their parents. The research also revealed that 6% of UK adults have received, or expect to receive, support with a first-home deposit. The same proportion have received help with rent or mortgage payments, and 6% have been assisted with clearing debt before applying for a mortgage.
The findings highlight the growing role of family wealth in improving access to the property ladder. While only 15% of UK adults receive financial support from their parents, those who do often receive substantial sums. One in four recipients received £10,000 or more, with around 16% receiving between £10,000 and £24,999. Nearly one in ten received between £30,000 and £50,000, and a further 0.3% received more than £50,000.
For letting agents and inventory clerks, these trends underline the ongoing challenges many tenants and prospective buyers face in securing housing. The reliance on parental support for deposits, rent, and mortgage payments may influence tenant profiles and the ability of renters to transition to homeownership.
