Nationwide Reports £45.8bn Gross Mortgage Lending for 2025-26
Nationwide has reported a 2.5% year-on-year increase in gross mortgage lending, reaching £45.8bn for the 12 months to 31 March 2026. The mutual’s mortgage loan book grew from £275.9bn to £286.3bn over the same period.
Net lending at Nationwide fell from £15.9bn to £10.3bn, a decrease attributed to high mortgage volumes in March 2025 before stamp duty thresholds were lowered in April. The average loan to value (LTV) for new lending remained stable at 72%.
The proportion of mortgage accounts in arrears of more than three months dropped from 0.43% to 0.39%. Nationwide’s profit before tax decreased from £2.3bn to £1.49bn, following its Fairer Share payment to members. Last year, the mutual paid out £1.8bn under this scheme and is set to release a further £440m from 10 June.
Nationwide’s results reflect its continued support for first-time buyers, including an expansion of higher loan-to-income lending and a focus on customer retention.
These developments are relevant for UK letting agents and inventory clerks monitoring lender activity, mortgage trends, and arrears rates in the property sector.
